STUDENT DRYLAND SESSION

December 21, 2000 -

Elementary Schools............in the morning before MMS. Each school responsible to run your own dry land ski clinic.

December 21, 2000 - Madison Middle School - 1:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. The purpose of dryland clinics is to size and fit student into skis/bindings before the skiers arrive on the hill. This is a good opportunity to mention safety and proper clothing. Shane Barnes will help out in any way that he can. Call him at Wk 538-6271. Ski School directors should be at the dryland session with all of their instructors who will be teaching beginners.

INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION

Instruction for elementary students is covered by volunteer parents who receive training from certified instructors of Kelly Canyon Ski School. Several ski clinics are provided volunteers to prepare them for this instruction. They must attend at least three ski clinics in order to qualify as an instructor. Instructors not attending at least 3 clinics will be dropped from the instructors pool. Kelly Canyon will be paid 5.00 for each volunteer who participates in a lesson.

There are five instructor courses this year - Skiing Course I, II, III and Snowboarding I and II

I - Beginner to wedge II - Wedge turn to Basic Christy III - Basic Christie to Wide Track Parallel

At each clinic cards will be handed out for you to sign and give to your clinician at the end of the clinic. Your clinician will sign and turn them in to us. Those who have three cards on file will be authorized to instruct for Madison School District. Clinicians cannot take a card from you for someone else. Each instructor must take Course I the first time they go. After that they may take the course or courses of their choice.

Clinic dates are as follows:

Wednesday, Dec 5, One session................ 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM (6:30 PM lodge session - 7:00 PM at Middle School

Thursday, Dec 13, 20, One session each night. 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM (6:30 PM lodge session - 7:00 PM on the hill

Saturday, Dec 15, 2001 Two sessions. 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM (9:30 AM lodge session - 10:00 on the hill)

We may have other clinics scheduled as needed in case of not enough snow. Possible dates are December 27th, 2001. Don't count on them.

We realize that there are emergencies which come up. However, instructors must commit to attend each student ski lesson day in order to be placed on the instructor list. Instructors must not be late. If late we will give their class to another instructor for the day. This includes the day as well as comp pass.

Every instructor will be responsible for the same group each day. Report students who do not attend ski instruction to your school ski director.

Instructors meet their students outside the lodge each day and take attendance.

Instructors should keep their students with them until the lesson is over. Lessons should last at least one hour and instructors must make every effort to give the students a quality and educational experience.

During the remainder of the day instructors will patrol the hill, ski with groups of students, watch for accidents, and be of service to any student needing help. It is imperative that we cut down on the number of students and adults that have been hurt in the program.

At the end of the day bus directors will help get buses loaded and make sure that no students are left behind.

When instructors receive passes for students who do not show, these passes should be returned to the director or the ticket office before the lesson is over so that Madison School District does not pay for them. Passes are accounted for by 3:00 PM each ski day.

Kelly Ski Canyon gives season ski passes to individuals in district as a thank-you for the effort and time that each commit in making the ski program a success. Some work many hours and spend time beyond their scope of employment. The season pass is reserved for these people. These passes are not transferable but may be exchanged for 8 regular day/comp passes. Kelly is very gracious to offer this gift. Season passes will be issued to those individuals upon the school principal's recommendation.

Kelly Canyon will provide our program with one free ski pass for each volunteer instructor on the day they are instructing. This day pass will be good if you choose to go up earlier in the day (no earlier than 10:30 am). We cannot provide early passes for students or instructors' children.

One complimentary lift pass will also be given each day to each volunteer instructor. This will be in addition to the free pass they receive for working that day and will be good on any day of the week including holidays. This "comp" pass is given in return for services rendered on the hill, in the lodge with rentals, and on busses, and will be calculated according to how many students are in the program (One for each 6 students who register plus several extras for those on buses or the rope tow.) All adults associated with the program should be available and willing to help at any time the program is in session.

Children of Instructors may get a half-day pass at student prices. Parents will be allowed to ski at student rates on the day their student is skiing. Other children in the family who desire to ski must pay full price.

Friends, relatives, etc. not part of program must pay full price.

Comp passes my not be used for others to get a discount in their ski school costs. The schools pay for every student pass but do not pay for comp passes. It is therefore impossible for schools to pay for student passes.

RENTAL INFORMATION

Kelly Canyon will provide forms for each school to fill out with all pertinent information. These forms should be completed during the dry land sessions or at least one week before the students arrive on the hill. Return all rental forms to Mike Lovell, Kelly Canyon rental coordinator at the Kelly Ski area. Skis and boots will be ready for students when they arrive.

Students will go up the stairs on the inside of the building and enter the rental shop to the left. They will find the ski package with their name on it and exit on the east. Four or five instructors or chaperons will be needed to help with this process.

Schools are not financially able to provide rental equipment for volunteer instructors. The instructors may however rent at the same price as the students.

BUS INFORMATION

Buses will be scheduled by each individual school. Students riding the bus up to the ski area must ride back on the bus, unless their parent(s) are at the ski area to take them home. Parents must make personal contact in person or by written consent with the supervisor in charge. Friends may not ride home with another student's parent without written consent. All students will be returned to the school.

STUDENT LUNCH

Students will need to bring a sack lunch from home, purchase a school sack lunch or bring money to purchase a lunch at the resort.

SAFETY

Students should always ski within the limits of their own ability and always stay within the ski area boundaries. Responsibility and common sense are the best safety precautions one can use. In the event of an accident please notify the nearest adult, ski director, or ski patrolman.

ACCIDENTS

Kelly Canyon Ski Patrol personnel must be made aware of any accidents. It is the responsibility of the ski patrol to determine if the injured person requires special attention such as ambulance, first aid, or CPR. Supervisors should inform the superintendent and the principal of the school as quickly as possible after having notified the ski patrol.

EQUIPMENT

Students should have skis, bindings, and boots that are in good condition. We cannot adjust, recommend, or guarantee the safety of any equipment, especially ski bindings. They must be adjusted by a certified professional. Instructors MUST NOT tamper with any student's bindings.

Several warm layers of clothing are better than one layer of heavy clothing. Make sure you have gloves or mittens, hat, coat, and other necessary clothing for a cold weather environment.

TRUANCY

Truancy to classes may result in the loss of student's privilege to ski and a refund in money. These students will be assigned another mini-course or will attend regular classes.

TERRAIN

Kelly Canyon will try to maximize conditions by keeping trails groomed and all lifts operating during the Tuesday through Friday Madison Ski Program.

INSTRUCTION - ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

During the week previous to the first lesson each school with have a dry land session where students will learn on the hill safety as well as equipment functions and ski ethics. Students renting equipment will be fitted and will learn procedures for equipment pick-up and return.

All intermediate and advanced skiers will participate in the dry land session. These students will participate in the safety and ethics portions of the presentation and will then be excused. Students renting equipment will stay until the rental procedures are covered.

1ST DAY OF INSTRUCTION

During the first day of instruction lessons will last 2 hours. Instructors will have a list of their students and will meet them in front of the lodge.

Beginners will meet outside the lodge with their instructor as soon as they have their equipment. The instructor will take roll and report any absences to the ski school director. At the end of the lesson the instructor will give the completed attendance form to the ski school director so that the principal can be aware of attendance. The instructor will aid students in getting equipment on and in making general preparations to ski. This group will then begin their first lesson at the bottom of the rope tow. These students will not start out by going up the lift. They may however, be able to negotiate the lift and beginner slope by the end of the first day.

Intermediate and Advanced students will meet their instructor in front of the lodge and then decide as a class where they will be skiing. They will have the same instructor each day. He or she will take roll each day and will report any absences to the ski school director and turn in the attendance form.

GENERAL NOTES AND REMINDERS

Children of volunteer instructors who are not part of the regular ski program (ie. younger children) are not encouraged to attend ski school. Pre-school children or children in k - 2nd grade should have a supervisor as provided by their parents and should not be with their parents/volunteer instructor during lesson time. This causes the instructor to focus less on the class and more on the child. In the case of children that are in 3rd or 4th grades, they should be put with a class of their ability level that will not create a distraction for their parents.

One check will be used to pay the resort each week. Delineate on the check the correct amounts for rental and passes.

If a parent is not part of our program they will not participate in any way in the Madison program, especially in any kind of supervisory or instructional capacity. We cannot have any untrained personnel participating.

Each school will pay for the number of rentals that are scheduled for use rather than just those that are actually used.

Each school will pay for the number of passes that are actually used.

Complimentary passes will be available on the day the instructor teaches and may be picked up at the ticket office at the time the day is given.

Students in Madison School District will not be allowed to instruct.

High School and Junior High chaperons receive free equipment paid for by the school and free skiing provided by the resort. No comp. passes are given.

Please provide a list of instructors to Alan, Jeff, and Scott at least 2 weeks before the date of the first instructor clinic.

Snowboarders

If the kids are renting from Kelly Canyon.........all Kelly needs to know is whether they are a boy or girl, their shoe size, and their height. Kids are welcome to rent from Brian Williams at the Sled Shed.
